Bikeabout Middleham

Class 2 have been following the adventures of Bikeabout for almost a year. We joined them as they prepared to cross the Gobi Desert, and we've been reading about their adventures on the Bikeabout blog ever since. We got a postcard from the Ukraine, and skyped with Chris and Liz last November - a very exciting day! So when they FINALLY reached England and Chris offered to pay us a visit, we were truly thrilled!

Our day started with a special assembly with Chris and the local PCSOs (Police Community Support Officers), then Chris talked to us about what he keeps in his panniers - and all the things we would need to think about if we were planning a trip. As we've been studying India, we thought carefully about what we would need to take with us if we travelled there by bike... it seemed a lot more than we could fit on a cycle!

We enjoyed our playground session with the PCSOs, especially the 'slow race' which tested our bike handling skills, and then in the afternoon we got to 'camp out' - putting up the tent, fitting it out and cooking over Chris's primus stove. Our golden time was spent in the sunshine, cycling around the playground on our bikes with our friends! We were proud to raise money for Chris's charity, delighted to meet Chris at long last, and now we're keen to have our own adventures, to be open to possibility and to live our dreams! I really enjoyed bike day!! Apparently Chris was in in the newspaper that my Grandpa reads and Grandpa knew a bit about Chris.

Thanks for adding a comment! I think Chris & LIz were in the Westmorland Gazette this week - is that what your Grandpa reads? Maybe we'll be in the Darlington and Stockton next week... did meeting Chris inspire you to think about your own adventure? Where would you like to cycle from and to?

Another splendid post. We had Chris visit as well and it was a real treat. We were all lucky with the weather.
If I were to go on a cycle journey I'd like to tour every state in America.
What we would need to take with us is very interesting. When children go on a residential trip for two nights, they can hardly carry their kit! What will you be taking on your residential.
I went to New York for a week, with just a small shoulder bag.
I wonder what your next blogging adventure will be?

The students loved that you guys got to ride your bikes at school. They think you have the best teacher in the whole world because you do such cool things. They liked the Vikings post, they liked the rowing in your room and now a day of bike riding was so cool they said. They enjoyed skyping with you about the holidays and teaching you about Thanksgiviing.

Wonder what Mrs. M will think of next for you guys to do?

You sure have a lot of great adventures! We love the idea of your bike day. Our school has a day set aside for for bringing your bikes to school, too. It is in the springtime when the temperatures are warmer.

We didn't know where the Gobi desert was so we looked it up and found out it was in Asia. We were surprised to find out how cold it was. We always thought that deserts were hot.

Madeline would like to go on an adventure to see the Grand Canyon. Have any of you ever been to the Grand Canyon? Gavin would like to go to the Bahamas. He thinks it would be fun to see an island and swim with the fish!

Thanks for taking the time to look at our blog! Chris told us that the Gobi Desert was a harsh place, and their greatest difficulty was finding enough water - sometimes they would go 5 days between water stops. They also had to contend with sand storms which sometimes made it impossible to cycle.
Madeline, I would love to go to the Grand Canyon too - I have read about it in books and seen it on TV, and it sounds just AMAZING!
Gavin, the Bahamas is a long way away from us... but Imogen in our class has been to Antigua (lucky girl!) Swimming with fish would be good... but we'd be a bit worried about sharks!

It's good to hear from you! Panniers are the bike bags that fit over the back wheel of the bike and hold all your belongings, and Chris's Charity is called Child's Dream - http://www.childsdream.org/ They are hoping to fund the building of a school in South East Asia.

It's been just great to read all your comments on our blog - thanks so much for visiting! Your bike rodeo looked like real fun! Belal, I didn't bring my bike into school as I had to bring in Chris's bike in the back of my car! I suppose we should both have cycled... I had a go on Matthew's bike though - it was a little small, and everyone laughed at me! I like cycling, but mainly in flat places - I'm not big on uphill... what about you?
Niagara Falls would be a great place to go... I remember watching a film of someone walking over Niagara Falls on a tightrope... now that would be an adventure!

Wow, I would love to do what you did. Make a tent, bike around and see how far and what you would need on a bike ride to India. We do something like that at our school , we have a bike rodeo. You have to ride down a line as slow as you can next you have to go through two yellow lines with out hitting one then you do a figure 8 loop last you zigzag through cones.

I thought your post about your bike adventure was really great! We have our own Bike Rodeo here at Bulverde Creek every year. This year I won a trophy for being second place out of all the third graders that participated. I wish that one day I could go on a bike adventure with my class, I think that would be amazing!
